Handicapping can be done in a variety of ways. One method is the “wisdom of crowds”, a concept that suggests a group of people coming together to form the same collective opinion is going to be more accurate than that of an individual. In the case of “The Angle”, the wisdom comes from a trio of college basketball originators who use their data and rankings to create their own projections.

“The Angle” is the brainchild of Luke DiVasta, the producer of Follow The Money and a soccer contributor here for us at VSiN.com. Luke is a smart guy and sharp handicapper in his own right, but college basketball can be a real beast. There are 365 Division I teams and having a handle on all of them is virtually impossible. Even having a handle on the four major conferences that get a lot more mainstream coverage can be daunting.

So, “The Angle” was born from surveying and comparing the odds and projections of those who do have a handle on the entirety of the college basketball landscape and it has produced some incredible results thus far.

What is “The Angle” for college basketball?

It’s pretty simple, but awfully powerful. The way it works is to compare the game projections from our own Greg Peterson, from Bart Torvik, and from Erik Haslam of Haslametrics to the college basketball odds in the betting market.

If all three – Peterson, Torvik, and Haslam – agree that a team should be favored based on their line or final score projection and the betting market has that team listed as an underdog on the opening line, it’s time to pounce.

How did “The Angle” come about? Here’s what Luke told me: “I got the idea from working on the FTM rundowns with Mitch [Moss]. He always added those prediction sites to the rundown as talking points for the games and I noticed that there were games that had this trend. One night I bet against both of them and went 0-2 and I committed to it after that.”

Entering play on Feb. 26, “The Angle” is 37-10 ATS (78.7%). DiVasta started working with what we’ll call a betting system back on Jan. 22.

Remember – this is based on the opening number, so it’s important to jump as quickly as possible. Links are above to the projections from Peterson, Torvik, and Haslam.

Here’s a link to DiVasta’s doc tracking the results and it’s worth noting that some of the losses have been tough beats or particularly excruciating that absolutely could have gone one way or the other.

Refer back to the doc to see which plays fit the criteria for that day’s games. Keep in mind, a lot of these are going to be small underdog prices since there are enough data points for the college basketball betting market to be pretty tight. It also means that “The Angle” has done well cashing small moneylines on these teams as well.

Virtually every show here at VSiN has caught onto “The Angle”, so you should be able to hear some analysis of the game(s) that apply throughout the day and certainly on Follow The Money from 4-7 p.m. ET.
