The Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament is spread over three different venues and will decide the lone NCAA Tournament participant out of the conference. First-round games will be played at UNF Arena (North Florida) and Swisher Coliseum (Jacksonville) and then VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, which is a new venue for the first neutral-site Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament since 2013.

All of the venues are located in Jacksonville, so there’s no travel here, but it is pretty odd to have the No. 9 and No. 11 seeds hosting conference tournament games.

All 12 teams qualify for the ASun Tournament, with byes for the top four seeds. Central Arkansas and Austin Peay are borderline top-150 teams depending on the rankings site you refer to and both are ranked quite a bit higher than the rest of the conference members. Note: if West Georgia wins the conference tournament, Central Arkansas will get the bid as the regular season champion because the Wolves are ineligible for the NCAA Tournament.

Favorite To Win Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament

Austin Peay and Central Arkansas only played once during the regular season and the Bears took that game by a 93-88 count in Clarksville, TN, so it was a strong road win and one that propelled UCA to the top seed. However, even with that road dub, it is the Governors who are favored to win the ASun Tournament.

Both teams absolutely shot the lights out in that head-to-head meeting, so if that’s our title game, it should be a barnburner. All three of Central Arkansas’ losses in conference play came in overtime (Bellarmine, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Gulf Coast). Austin Peay actually lost the final two regular season games and gave up 1.372 points per possession to Central Arkansas and 1.342 PPP and 111 points to Bellarmine in the finale, a game played to 83 possessions.

Austin Peay has the better statistical profile between the two teams, at least according to what happened in conference play, but that’s mostly because opponents shot 38% from 3 against the Bears. The Governors were tops in adjusted defensive efficiency and eFG%, but the Bears were second thanks to a high TO%.

Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Darkhorse

If the 111-point effort in the finale against Austin Peay wasn’t enough evidence, Bellarmine plays a very high-variance style. They also split with Central Arkansas and Austin Peay. They can be very dynamic on offense, but are downright awful on defense. They should beat Jacksonville in the first round, setting up a matchup with Central Arkansas. The +5500 price absolutely classifies them as a darkhorse.

They enter this tournament fifth in the nation in eFG% offense, top-10 in 2P% and top-20 in 3P%. Also, there are 365 Division I teams and they rank 365th in eFG% defense and adjusted defensive efficiency.

Queens is a lite version of Bellarmine, in that they are great on offense and not as bad on defense. They also play at the fastest tempo in the conference. But, a 4/1 price hardly fits the definition of this heading.

Betting Pick to Win The Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament

If Central Arkansas does get past the Bellarmine/Jacksonville winner, they do have an advantage with the scheduling, as they’d play the quarterfinal game at Noon ET before playing again at 5 p.m. ET the next day. Meanwhile, Austin Peay, Queens, or whoever wins in the night session has less recovery time. The same is true with the 2 p.m. ET title game.

That being said, I like the favorite Austin Peay. They aren’t as reliant on long jumpers as the other teams in the conference and we don’t really know how this new venue will play. The Governors are good at getting to the rim and are the best defensive team in the field.

Pick: Austin Peay (+205)
