Right up there with betting on teams to cover the spread, over/under wagers are another popular and exciting option in sports betting. The most common over/under bets involve the combined total points for a game, but some sportsbooks also offer partial game totals (e.g., 1st half, 1st quarter, etc.) and even over/unders for a specific team’s total points. Many beginners and casual bettors, in particular, enjoy betting the over, as cheering for more points tends to enhance the viewing experience. Today, we’ll be looking at the top Power 4 schools in the country since 2020 and identifying which programs have been the most successful at covering traditional combined total points over/unders.

Best Power 4 Schools vs the Over since 2020

ACC: Since 2020, the Pitt Panthers have been the best team out of the ACC when it comes to covering the over, doing so at a 62.9% rate (39-23-1). Led by defensive-minded head coach Pat Narduzzi, the Panthers have also put together some strong seasons—most notably winning the ACC Championship in 2021. One of the key trends behind Pitt’s success in hitting overs is their performance in non-conference games, where the over has hit 80% of the time since 2020, with a record of 16-4. Another area where Pitt has shown a remarkably high over-hit rate is when playing with a rest advantage, hitting the over 76.9% of the time with a 10-3 record.

Big 10: Though the USC Trojans played the majority of their games in the Pac-12 during this time period, they currently hold the best record in covering the over among Big Ten teams since 2020. Led by the “QB whisperer” Lincoln Riley (since 2022), the Trojans have posted a 36-22-0 record (62.1%) in that span, showing consistent reliability when it comes to hitting overs. One standout trend is USC’s performance against ranked opponents—since 2020, the Trojans have gone 13-3-0 (81.3%) in hitting the over in those matchups.  USC has also seen a slight bump in covering the over since Riley has taken over, as they’ve covered the over 70% of the time with a record of 28-12-0.

Big 12: Given how evenly matched the teams are in terms of talent, betting over/unders might be the smartest approach if you’re looking to wager on Big 12 football this season. While they’re more commonly recognized for their basketball success, the Kansas Jayhawks have quietly been a strong bet to hit the over since 2020. One of those seasons was led by head coach Les Miles, while the rest—including the upcoming one—have been under the leadership of Lance Leipold. With a record of 35-21-3 (62.5%) against the over, Kansas has been especially effective in two scenarios: after a loss, where they’ve hit the over at a 25-7-1 clip (78.1%), and as an away underdog, covering the over 16-5-2 (76.2%) in those games.

SEC: Coming in as the best team against the spread in the SEC since 2020, the Arkansas Razorbacks also hold the top spot in the conference when it comes to covering overs during that same span. With an overall record of 36-24-1 (60%) on overs, Arkansas has been especially strong in non-conference matchups, where they’ve posted a 15-4-0 record (78.9%). It will be interesting to see if the Razorbacks can maintain both trends—covering the spread and the over—as they head into the 2025 season.

With several avenues to explore this college football season, betting overs is certainly one of the most entertaining options. Sportsbooks do tend to be sharper with over/under lines than they are with spreads, so if you’re planning to bet totals this season, be sure to dot your i’s and cross your t’s. Pay close attention to weather conditions and injury reports in particular, as these are two of the biggest factors that can impact over/under outcomes.
