BEST BET: Bridgesong (2nd race)
Second Race
1. Bridgesong
2. Moonstrocity
3. Ovechkin
Not sure what to make of all the first time starters in this lineup but will go with the more experienced ones starting with BRIDGESONG who made a premature run to the lead, faltered late stages after dropping down in deeper going near rail out-running his odds trying seven furlongs in debut. Race flattered when three members of the field returned to win next starts including Growth Equity with 83 Beyer at Aqueduct and 3rd finisher Unsearchable bested MSW company here with an 82 Beyer in his last start. . MOONSTROCITY showed improvement at second asking when switched back to the main while trapped in deeper footing near rail and like the fact he’s already had two starts at the distance. Third could prove the charm. OVECHKIN a bit of a hanging sort to date but should benefit from turn back in distance after finishing evenly going nine furlongs in latest. Thinking Silver Impact might be best of the new ones. Kin to 4 time G1 winner Emollient and Fla D/Belmont S. runnerup Hofburg.

Here are Mike’s thoughts on the other 13 races on Saturday’s Gulfstream Park card, including the Florida Derby and the Gulfstream Park Oaks.
First Race
1. War Bomber
2. Paris Surprise
3. Favorable Scenario
WAR BOMBER shows up well spotted for the tag in opener while returning to the turf, a surface he’s handled nicely in the past. Shortens up in distance to a mile, may ultimately prove one to catch if away running from the rail. PARIS SURPRISE the preferred one’s uncoupled mate and likely to be forwardly played himself coming off gate to wire win over the surface vs. weaker. Top pair looked good training in company on Tapeta for this. FAVORABLE SCENARIO was hung wide, never menaced when forced to the Tapeta for 2026 debut now back to preferred surface today. Earned high marks when second best to the G3 placed Capitol Hill two back at the Big A.
Cutler Bay Stakes (Race 3)
Embed from Getty Images1. Learntodiscover
2. Sheriff Bart
3. Immortalised
LEARNTODISCOVER makes U.S. debut getting full makeover, first time gelding and with blinkers added. Beat Puerto Rico on graduation day at 2, that won now a two time Group 1 winner. SHERIFF BART comes off far and away his best yet despite an awkward start, been given plenty of time to recuperate from that effort. Ran third to G2 placed Turf Star when debuting over the surface last summer at Kentucky Downs. Could be sitting on yet another forward move. IMMORTALISED the preferred one’s uncoupled mate and obviously in top form exiting a pair of wins over this course. Might have to step up another notch jumping in with stakes competition for first time today.
Appleton Stakes presented by DRF (Race 4)
1. Quatrocento
2. Spirit of St Louis
3. Nantasket Beach
QUATROCENTO getting very tepid nod exiting easy and popular win against perhaps a bit softer last time at Tampa Bay Downs. Always dangerous if able to shake loose early but may have to deal with Prevent if looking for the lead here. SPIRIT OF ST LOUIS obviously off best form of late but has been freshened now tries G3 company for just the second time off the layoff. Must respect his class returning over a course he won the G1 Pegasus Turf here a year ago. NANTASKET BEACH taking a good step up in class off the recent starter allowance win but loves the strip and couldn’t be training any better coming out of that race.
Fifth Race
1. Thought Control
2. Jimmy’s Dailys
3. Eastbostonbenny
What THOUGHT CONTROL lacks in experience he might make up for in pure speed. Disappointed in debut, got plenty of time off, returned with well graded maiden win on Tapeta. Continues to train like a good thing but will have to prove he can repeat that effort on dirt with the potential for an early challenge from Eastbostonbenny. May be this good. JIMMY’S DAILYS looms the most likely beneficiary if the pace gets too hot returning to dirt, shortening up to 6 1/2 furlongs today. Was narrowly beaten last summer at CD by 4/5 Smoken Wicked, a G2 winner earlier in the season at the Spa. EASTBOSTONBENNY rarely runs a poor one and comes in fresh off the bench after a bit of a disappointing try in Delaware finale. Figures to press issue from the outset.
Sixth Race
1. Talbingo
2. Private Thoughts
3. Pass the Hat
TALBINGO made very promising turf debut and had the win flattered when two of his victims returned to win at next asking. Steps up a notch but in hot hands and perhaps good enough to handle the hike in current form. PRIVATE THOUGHTS a model of consistency over turf and Tapeta and another exiting a key race in his seasonal bow. May prove one to beat. PASS THE HAT another coming off sharp turf victory earlier in the session and perhaps better than ever now that he’s learned to rate the speed he has shown at the start of his career.
Ghostzapper Stakes (Race 7)
1. Grande
2. Forged Steel
3. Capital Idea
GRANDE stepping back into stakes company for just the second time but hard to look past even at the very short price off anything shown to date. Looks like he should be able to control this bunch from gate to wire. FORGED STEEL appears to have found a new home on dirt especially off last showing at Tampa. Steps up in company but continues to train forwardly for the occasion.CAPITAL IDEA a very consistent and well-traveled sort making local bow for top barn. Hard to leave out of the equation.
Orchid Stakes (Race 8)
1. Ayra Stark
2. Speed Shopper
3. Just Basking
AYRA STARK comes off a couple of game efforts behind nemesis SPEED SHOPPER both on synthetic and turf, once again looks like the controlling speed in this spot. Might avenge those setbacks if able to relax long enough on front end for Rosario. Speed S. obviously tough to ignore in current form. Strictly one to beat. JUST BASKING comes off career best effort when trying three turns on turf for first time in The Very One. Might be even better the further he goes.
Gulfstream Park Oaks (Race 9)
1. Just Singing
2. Prom Queen
3. She Be Smooth
JUST SINGING not only multiple graded stakes placed but with three starts already at the distance, perhaps a big advantage going up against the relatively inexperienced top contenders PROM QUEEN and SHE BE SMOOTH. Stretch running sort adding blinkers to perhaps keep in better contact with the leaders in local bow. Prom Queen was down on the dead rail when beaten by SBS in their first meeting, handled two turns nicely earning diploma in impressive fashion at second asking. Expecting further improvement with that one under her belt. She Be Smooth hard to ignore off a couple of easy wins to start career although did find herself out in better part of track on both occasions. Looks like a filly who should have little issue getting the added ground but at what figures to be a very short price in here.
Sanibel Island Stakes (Race 10)
1. Secret Hideaway
2. Tam Tam
3. Secane
SECRET HIDEAWAY not quite up to Group 2 competition in Europe but not facing that kind in U.S. bow. Has held own and then some in a.m. with stable mate Imaginationthelady, winner of the Grade 2 Jassmine and 4th in the Breeders’ Cup JFT at 2. TAM TAM jumped well up when making turf bow to earn diploma in 3yo bow and should be able to build off that effort returning to the grass for stakes debut. Looked good prepping for this over Payson main. SECANE a question over the surface but held own in the a.m. recently on Tapeta with Bull by the Horns, who won Rushaway at Turfway Park last weekend off the pair’s 3/15 work.
Army Mule Stakes (Race 11)
1. Scotland
2. Back Em Up
3. Owen Almighty
SCOTLAND as good as any in this extremely wide open mix. Given a break off dull one last time after holding own in a series of sprint tries with some top company including Cigar Mile winner Bishop’s Bay in the G3 Forty Niner. Should have ample pace to run at in this spot. BACK EM UP training forwardly after getting bogged down on a dead rail last time. Held own with rest of the pace behind odds on Knightsbridge in the G3 Hooper to start the campaign and back at what may be his preferred distance today. OWEN ALMIGHTY another who might benefit from projected pace scenario coming off a layoff of his own. Working well for the return. Can be along for at least a minor share. Both Macho Music and Concrete Glory training extremely well but appear to be headed for potential speed duel if both go.
Sand Springs Stakes (Race 12)
1. Maggie Go
2. Hang the Moon
3. Yes It Tiz
MAGGIE GO woke back up a bit returning to grass to beat modest field making local bow but with enough back class to handle the jump to this level. Was second best behind Whiskey Division last spring in the Eatontown, the latter finishing 4th in Pegasus FM Turf and missing a nose last out at Tampa in the Hillsborough. HANG THE MOON comes off much improved showing getting some class relief, switching to Saffie J barn for ’26 bow and with plenty of back class of her own to warrant long look in this spot. YES IT TIZ a question mark switching to grass but with plenty of turf pedigree to call upon including SW half sis Darlana.
Pan American Stakes (Race 13)
1. Corruption
2. Dashman
3. Far Bridge
CORRUPTION fell a nose shy of upsetting Far Bridge in this event a year ago and certainly far more seasoned since that meeting. Prompted pace of red hot Wolfie’s Dynaghost before paying the price late stages of G3 River City in 2025 finale. Might try to steal this one gate to wire from the rail. DASHMAN comes off what appears to be a much needed outing here last month but proven over course and distance having won the McKnight here 14 months earlier. FAR BRIDGE’s resume’ speaks for itself and he’s come back from long layoffs like this to win off the bench several times in the past but another year older and likely to be too short a price to take a chance that he’ll be able to turn that trick again.
Florida Derby (Race 14)
1. Commandment
2. Nearly
3. Chief Wallabee
Very hard to separate the top contenders in the main event. COMMANDMENT as game as can be making two turn bow in the Fountain of Youth, turning back determined bid by Chief Wallabee down the stretch despite racing in the deeper going right near the rail. Seems to have bounced out of that effort in good order from the looks of his recent works. Gets shaky nod to keep the winning streak going with any kind of a trip. NEARLY comes in freshest of the main players, perhaps enough of an advantage to get him home on top. Hard to fault anything he’s done locally, beat up on much softer bunch in Holy Bull although did ride the track bias that day. CHIEF WALLABEE the least experienced member of the group but extremely talented as he proved making just his second start in FOY. Working well exiting the outing although must wonder if he’ll go forward from the experience or back a bit exiting such a grueling effort on just 4 weeks rest. The Puma held own with Wallabee in debut while trapped in the deeper footing down the stretch, overcame very wide trip to win TBD and solid in lone work out of that race. Main concern he’s back on just 3 weeks off that try.
