Keeneland Picks for Wednesday, October 15:

HORSING AROUND: Nine days into the Fall meet at Keeneland, the competition for both winningest trainer and jockey are as tight as Mr. Ed’s wallet when the check arrives while dining out with fellow horseplayers. Brendan Walsh leads all trainers with seven trips to the Winner’s Circle, closely followed by Brad Cox and HOFer Todd Pletcher with six apiece. As for the leading jockey, Irad Ortiz, Jr. leads with 12 victories, followed by three, brother Jose, Luis Saez, and HOFer Johnny Velasquez, with nine wins each. It should also be noted that young Tyler Gaffalione leads all riders with 33 in-the-money finishes. With more than two decades following the Kentucky meet, Mr. Ed believes the competition in both contests will remain tight right up through closing day on October 25. While Wednesday’s uninspiring, eight-race card at Keeneland offers little to write about, Mr. Ed has found a few plays worth pursuing. Under expected summer-like, fast and firm conditions, first post goes at 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT. Here’s a look at Mr. Ed’s selections.
Mr. Ed’s Picks at Keeneland for Wednesday (10/15)
Race 1 — $57K CLAIMING for 3YOs & up going 6 furlongs
To get his horseplaying juices flowing, Mr. Ed likes a pair in the first leg of the early Daily Double: #1 CHIRINGO (5-2 morning line) for trainer Jose D’Angelo, who replaces Jose Ortiz with brother Irad in the saddle. I also like #3 I GOT NO MUNNY (9-2) with Edgar Morales riding for low-profile trainer Kelli Martinez. Counting on one to get the job done.
KEENELAND SELECTION: $5 Daily Double of 1,3/3,4. ($20)
Race 2 (1:32 p.m. ET/10:32 a.m. PT) — $69K STARTER ALLOWANCE for 3YOs & up going 7 furlongs
Mr. Ed’s money is on #3 UNCASHED (7-2 morning line), entered by top Midwest trainer Larry Rivelli with a significant rider upgrade to Irad Ortiz, Jr., and speedy #4 PINFIRE (1-1) for trainer Michael Tomlinson with jockey Axel Concepcion returning.
Race 3 (2:04 p.m. ET/11:04 a.m. PT) — $58K CLAIMING for fillies and mares, 3YOs & up going 1 1/16-mile
I’m betting on two of three to finish 1-2: #5 SHE’S A SWEDE (7-5 morning line) for top Kentucky-based conditioner Kenny McPeek; #6 MISS TIFEYE (3-1) for trainer Matt Shirer, and #7 PARKING LOT POURS (9-2) for trainer Claude Brownfield.
KEENELAND SELECTION: $5 Exacta Box of 5,6,7. ($30)
Race 4 (3:36 p.m. ET/12:36 p.m. PT) — $69K CLAIMING for fillies and mares, 3YOs & up going 6 furlongs
Mr. Ed’s pick is #7 GOLDEN DEGREE (8-5 morning line), trained by William Morey, who names top jockey Irad Ortiz to ride. Coed drops in class, goes around two turns for the first time. Looks like a formula for success.
KEENELAND SELECTION: $10 to Win. ($10)
Race 6 (3:40 p.m. ET/12:40 p.m. PT) — $130K ALLOWANCE for fillies and mares, 3YOs & up going 1½-miles on the turf
Mr. Ed likes a trio: #2 KISS BLUE (3-1 morning line) for trainer Riley Mott and jockey Tyler Gaffalione (for first time); #4 POPPY THE PRINCESS (9-2) with Julien Leparoux riding for trainer Troy Newton, and #5 AYRA STARK (7-5) with jockey Jose Ortiz teaming with trainer Ignacio Correas.
KEENELAND SELECTION: $5 Exacta Box. ($30)
Race 7 (4:12 p.m. ET/1:12 p.m. PT) — $110K MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT for 2YO fillies going 7 furlongs
I pick #10 BONNE SANTE (5-2 morning line). Team of trainer Will Walden and jockey Luis Saez seeks to improve in the second start with a switch from dirt to turf. Outside post should help a winning finish.
KEENELAND SELECTION: $10 to Win & $5 Daily Double of 10/2. ($15)
Race 8 (4:44 p.m. ET/1:44 p.m. PT) — $120K ALLOWANCE for fillies and mares 3YO & up going 5½ furlongs on the grass
Mr. Ed likes Irish-bred #3 DANGHERECOMESSHANG (5-1 morning line) for superior turf sprint trainer Wesley Ward, who retains veteran Victor Espinoza to ride. Improving coed should handle this so-so field.
KEENELAND SELECTION: $10 to Win & Place. ($20)
TOTAL WAGERS: $125
NEXT UP AT KEENELAND: Mr. Ed looks forward to Race 3 on Thursday, a MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT contest for 2YOs going 7 furlongs. The sprint features a field of 11 youngsters, including #6 COLOSSUS, a $975K purchase for Gustavo Delgado and #7 OUR FOREFATHERS, a $1.2 million colt for Peter Eurton. The MSW contests at Keeneland often produce future Triple Crown contestants. Ed will be here on VSiN with his exclusive selections on Thursday’s nine-race program.
