Game: Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants

Date: October 9th at 8:15 PM ET

Where to Watch: Prime Video

After two straight weeks of NFC West Thursday Night Football matchups, we now get an NFC East showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants. The Eagles finally suffered their first loss of the season in a game they led 17-3 going into the fourth quarter against the Denver Broncos. Offensively, Philadelphia has been streaky—showing stretches where they look completely out of sync, followed by halves where they appear to be the best team in football. Defensively, the Eagles have been middle of the pack statistically but remain one of the tougher teams to score against.

As for the Giants, they dropped their first game with Jaxson Dart under center, largely due to costly turnovers. Their defense has struggled as well, ranking 26th in yards allowed per game at 377.2. Thursday night games are always challenging given the short week of preparation, and it will be interesting to see how both teams respond following Week 5 losses.

Weather

Early in this game, weather doesn’t look like it will be an issue; however, later on, there appears to be a decent chance of precipitation. Temperatures will remain in the low to mid-70s throughout the game, with winds ranging between 8 and 13 mph.

Betting Overview

This NFC East matchup opened with Philadelphia at -7 at most sportsbooks, though some listed them at -7.5. With most of the bets and money coming in on Philadelphia, this line could move further in the Eagles’ favor. The moneyline has already shifted significantly toward the Eagles, moving from -305 to between -375 and -400, while New York has moved from +245 to between +300 and +310. The over/under has also ticked down from its original line of 43.5 to either 41 or 41.5, depending on the sportsbook.

Position Group & Coaching Comparisons

Coaching: Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka have yet to show consistency on the offensive side of the ball, and defensive coordinator Shane Bowen has not elevated the Giants defense to its full potential. On the other side, while the Eagles’ offense has had its struggles, this staff simply knows how to win. Vic Fangio continues to make life difficult for opposing offenses week after week. Philadelphia clearly has the coaching edge here.

DLs vs. OLs: If this matchup had taken place in the preseason, the gap would have been significant. However, through five weeks, the Eagles’ offensive line hasn’t lived up to expectations, while the Giants’ defensive front has been one of their biggest strengths. It’s surprising to say, but based on this season’s performance, the battle in the trenches looks even.

QBs: Jalen Hurts has faced his fair share of criticism this season, but he brings far more experience than Jaxson Dart and has proven time and time again that he can perform at an elite level when needed.

RBs & TEs vs. LBs: This matchup leans in favor of the Eagles, even with Saquon Barkley’s relatively slow start. Philadelphia’s linebackers continue to fly around and make plays, and tight end Dallas Goedert has remained a steady contributor through five games.

WRs vs. Secondaries: Neither secondary has been particularly impressive, but the Eagles hold the advantage here. Philadelphia not only has the stronger defensive backfield, but they also boast the deeper and more talented wide receiver group — especially with the Giants missing Malik Nabers.

Betting Trends

Over the last 10 meetings between these teams dating back to 2020, the Eagles have won seven straight up, split against the spread, and seen the under hit in seven of those 10 matchups. Last season, Philadelphia won and covered in both games, with the under cashing in each contest.

The Eagles enter this matchup 3-2 ATS overall but have been perfect on the road, going 2-0 ATS in games where they were favored. The under has been slightly more common for Philadelphia, hitting in three of five games this season and splitting evenly in their road contests.

As for New York, the Giants are 2-3 ATS and 1-1 as a home underdog this year. The under has been a strong trend for them, hitting in four of their five games so far and in both of their home matchups.

Final Thoughts

This is definitely a tough game to bet, as division rivalries are often unpredictable. However, with the Eagles coming off their first loss of the season, I think they enter this one with something to prove. Based on the current lines, I like Philadelphia to cover, as they have in each of the last two matchups against the Giants. As for the total, the over/under could truly go either way.
