Introduction
Drake Maye, the young man from Charlotte, NC, a Myers Park High School and University of North Carolina alum, will be entering his second season in the NFL after being drafted by the New England Patriots with the 3rd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Though Maye won’t have continuity at head coach or offensive coordinator this year, the Patriots are bringing home former player and ex-Titans head coach Mike Vrabel to take over head coaching duties. New England is also welcoming back a familiar face in Josh Mcdaniels as offensive coordinator, who was alongside Tom Brady for the majority of his career in Foxborough. The Patriots appeared to stagnate toward the end of Bill Belichick’s tenure and throughout the brief stint under Jerod Mayo, so this seems like the necessary shake-up the organization needed.

Considering Drake Maye played behind one of the worst offensive lines and receiving corps in the league last season—and didn’t make his first start until Week 6—he still managed to put together a respectable rookie campaign. Maye threw for 2,276 yards (24th in the NFL), rushed for 421 yards (9th among QBs), threw 15 touchdown passes (15th), added 2 rushing touchdowns, threw 10 interceptions (17th most), and had 4 fumbles (12th most).
This offseason, New England prioritized improving Maye’s protection by drafting Will Campbell (LT) in the first round, acquiring Garrett Bradbury to play center, and signing Morgan Moses to solidify the right tackle position. On the outside, the Patriots added wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins, giving both Maye and Mcdaniels more reliable weapons in the passing game.
Drake Maye is currently projected at 3,250.5 passing yards (over -115; under -105, per DraftKings)—a mark he should be able to surpass if he stays healthy behind his improved line and with upgraded targets. He’s also listed at 19.5 passing touchdowns (over -120; under +100). Last season, despite not starting the first five games or playing in Week 18, he was on pace for 23 passing touchdowns.
Final Thoughts
With a new regime in New England and a significantly revamped roster, Drake Maye has a real opportunity to take a big step forward in 2025. While chemistry may still be developing, there’s no doubt the Patriots have built a stronger foundation around their young quarterback. Fans and bettors alike have every reason to believe that Maye can meet—or even exceed—expectations this upcoming season.
