Game: Troy vs Clemson

Where to watch: ACC Network

Clemson certainly did not get off to the start they wanted last week, looking sluggish on offense, which can happen in a season opener. Fortunately, they have a great bounce-back opportunity this week against a Group of 5 opponent in Troy. Troy comes in off a 38-20 win over Nicholls, with most of their production on the ground, rushing for 272 yards while throwing for just 144. Clemson will also look to establish the run after managing only 31 rushing yards last week against LSU, which completely derailed their time of possession. Troy was solid against the run in their opener, holding Nicholls to just 65 yards, but Clemson presents a challenge on a completely different level. This game opened with Clemson -33.5 and has since shifted between -30.5 and -31.5 at most sportsbooks. The over/under has held steady at 51.5 across the board.

Weather

Temperatures for this game are expected to be in the low-to-mid 80s, with a 50% chance of thunderstorms between 5:00 and 6:00 PM ET. Wind could play a minor role, averaging around 8 mph with gusts reaching up to 15 mph.

Betting Overview/Trends

As it stands, 81% of public bets have been on Troy to cover, which explains the movement on the spread in their direction. A massive 92% of bets are on the under, so it will be interesting to see if that total shifts as kickoff approaches.

Both teams failed to cover last week, though Troy’s game went over while Clemson’s stayed under. Last season, the Trojans were 3-3 ATS as a road underdog, with the over/under also splitting 3-3 in that scenario. Clemson went 3-0 ATS following a loss, but as a home favorite they were just 3-4. The over cashed in 2 of 3 games after a Clemson loss last year, and hit in 4 of 7 games when they were a home favorite.

Final Thoughts

While many bettors are siding with Troy on the spread in this matchup, Clemson typically responds well after a tough game. I expect the same here, as Dabo won’t allow the same mistakes to carry over from last week. If Clemson can establish the run, this game shouldn’t stay close for long.
