Here are my Week 4 college football best bets:
Miami (OH) (+3) (-125) vs. UNLV
The Rebels have continued their winning ways with a 3-0 start under first-year head coach Dan Mullen. While you should never apologize for victories, UNLV has not exactly played a murderer’s row with wins over FCS Idaho State, who the Rebels only defeated by 7 and allowed to gain 555 yards, at now 0-3 Sam Houston State, and vs. now 0-3 UCLA, who just fired head coach Deshaun Foster after an embarrassing home loss to New Mexico.
Meanwhile, Miami (OH) is off to an 0-2 start, losing two games on the road—Wisconsin and Rutgers—versus Big Ten opponents.
The Red Hawks were shut out at Wisconsin, 17-0, and then lost 45-17 at Rutgers in a game that was closer than the final score indicated were Miami was only outgained 421-368.
UNLV is in a weird scheduling spot here off a bye week (Miami also off a bye), but with another bye next week before its Mountain West opener at Wyoming on 10/4. Plus, it is a 9 AM PT kickoff for the Rebels.
While Miami replaced essentially its entire offense, QB Dequan Finn came back to the MAC and was once the MVP of this conference back in 2023. The rebuilt offense should have more success against a UNLV club that has been outgained in two of its three games.
Chuck Martin is just a tad under 60% (42-29-1) as an underdog for his head coaching career.
Clemson (-16.5) vs. Syracuse
Embed from Getty ImagesClemson was expected to return to its championship contender level in 2025 after reaching the CFP last year. However, the Tigers have taken a step back with a 1-2 start, including losing its ACC opener at Georgia Tech last week.
Dabo Swinney was on the defensive this week at his press conference:
Clemson Sports on X: “Dabo Swinney responds to critics: “I mean, if Clemson is tired of winning. They can send me on my way, but I’m gonna go somewhere else and coach. I ain’t going to the beach.”
“If they want me gone, if they’re tired of winning, they can send me on my way because that’s all we’ve done is win. So if they’re tired of winning, we’ve won this league eight out of the last 10 years, is that not good? I’m just asking. Is that good?” Swinney said, per Clemson Sports on X, “To go to the Playoff seven out of 10 years, be in four national championships, win it twice?
“If Clemson’s tired of winning, they can send me on my way, but I’m gonna go somewhere else and coach. I ain’t going to the beach. Hell, I’m 55. I’ve got a long way to go. Y’all are gonna have to deal with me for a while. I’m just getting going. I’m just now good enough to be a head coach.”
So, as we can see, Dabo seems to be in a great mood getting ready for Syracuse this week.
Syracuse overachieved and went 10-3 in Fran Brown’s first year but only returned eight starters this year and is rebuilding.
Notre Dame transfer QB Steve Angeli leads the nation with 1108 passing yards through only three games, but that was against Tennessee and UConn, trailing in both games, and FCS Colgate, a team that the Orange allowed to gain over 400 yards. It’s a defense that might be a ‘get right’ group for a struggling Cade Klubnik to get back on track against.
Klubnik also gets back First Team All-ACC WR Antonio Williams, who has missed the Tigers’ first free games with a hamstring injury.
With a bye week on deck, Clemson should be fully focused and angry enough to lay out Syracuse.
Wisconsin (-10) vs. Maryland
Wisconsin QB Billy Edwards Jr. is currently listed as questionable to play against the team he was the starting QB for last year, Maryland. However, he has been practicing this week and would appear more than likely to play, if not start, against his old teammates.
The Badgers are in the midst of a brutal schedule that already has included last weekend’s 38-14 loss at Alabama and also consists of games at Michigan, vs. Iowa, vs. Ohio State, at Oregon, vs. Washington, at Indiana, and vs. Illinois. Needless to say, this is one they must have in order to return to a bowl game after having a 22-year consecutive bowl appearance streak broken last season.
Maryland is 3-0, but those wins were against a slate that included Florida Atlantic, Northern Illinois, and FCS Towson.
True freshman QB Malik Washington will be making his first start in Camp Randall on Saturday. He will be forced to make throws against a solid defense in plenty of third-and-long situations, considering the Terps are only averaging 3.5 yards per carry on the ground.
Terps head coach Mike Locksley is also just 6-14 ATS as a road underdog during his tenure at Maryland.
With a bye week on deck, this looks like a good spot for the Badgers to run away and hide from a bottom-level Big Ten opponent before facing their gauntlet of a conference schedule.
Temple (+24) at Georgia Tech
It is always difficult to back a team that burned you last week, which is what Temple did as they were never competitive in a 42-3 loss vs. Oklahoma, in what on paper, was a tricky spot for the Sooners.
Now Temple takes to the road to face Georgia Tech, who is in a bit of a tricky spot of its own. The Yellow Jackets pulled off the upset over Clemson last week, hitting the 55-yard fire drill field goal at the buzzer, leading to the fans storming the field at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Georgia Tech has a conference game with Wake Forest on deck next week, and this could be a just get through it type of game. The Yellow Jackets have been in these situations before. Just last year, they got ranked (just like this week) for the first time two weeks after the upset of Florida State, and then lost at home to Syracuse. In 2023, after upsetting Wake Forest on the road, they lost at home as huge favorites vs. Bowling Green. Brent Key is only 2-5-1 ATS as home favorite in now his fourth season in Atlanta.
The Owls should have a better effort this week for first-year head coach KC Keeler, who is certainly a bit more on edge after getting embarrassed at home in his first spotlight game since returning to what is essentially his hometown of Philadelphia.
Baylor (-125 ML) vs. Arizona State
The unbeaten showdown with Texas Tech at Utah will be the headline game in the Big XII this week, but this conference opener will also be vital for both teams to get a leg up in conference play.
Baylor failed its first test in the opener against Auburn as the Tigers ran for 307 on the ground, including 137 from QB Jackson Arnold, as the Bears lost 38-24 despite outgaining Auburn 483-415.
The following week, Baylor saved its season coming back from a two-touchdown deficit with a little over five minutes to go at SMU, winning 48-45 in 2 OT.
This week, Baylor faces a formidable Arizona State rushing attack averaging 232.3 per game (19th nationally). Sun Devils QB Sam Leavitt has 11 rushes for 10 or more yards already this season, second-most amongst FBS QBs.
On the other hand, Arizona State, who is currently shorthanded in the secondary, has to deal with a Baylor passing game led by QB Sawyer Robertson, who is second in FBS in passing yards (1070) and third in passing touchdowns (10).
Arizona State came out of nowhere to win the Big XII in its first season in the conference last year, but now they are the hunted and will get a Baylor team that is rejuvenated after a disappointing opening loss.
Quick Hits
Eastern Michigan (+3) (-120) vs. UL Lafayette
UL Lafayette is currently starting true freshman Daniel Beale at QB after LSU transfer Walker Howard went down to injury in the opener.
Eastern Michigan failed to cover late in a 48-23 defeat at Kentucky last week but did put up 461 yards of offense. The Eagles are currently 0-3 and certainly would like to remove the bad taste out of its mouth having lost to FCS Long Island two weeks ago at home in Ypsilanti.
Chris Creighton is also 47-30-2 ATS as an underdog in his 12 years at Eastern Michigan.
Troy Team Total Under 17.5 (-120) at Buffalo
Troy starting QB Goose Crowder was hurt last week vs. Memphis and is out with a shoulder injury. Backup Tucker Kilcrease went just 10-for-29 for 65 yards and an INT in relief.
Buffalo was over three-touchdown favorites but barely got out with a victory last week at Kent State, so expect a more focused effort here.
Purdue (+25.5) at Notre Dame
While a lot of that roster is gone, Purdue certainly remembers being humiliated 66-7 at home by Notre Dame last year.
Notre Dame had to win out, after an inexplicable loss to Northern Illinois, to make the CFP last year, and they did just that. Now, they have to do so again to even have a chance to repeat said feat.
The Irish likely get back on track here, but Purdue competed for 60 last week in covering against USC and likely can do the same here against a Notre Dame defense that has taken a big step back under Chris Ash as opposed to the elite group Al Golden led last year.
Kansas (-12.5) vs. West Virginia
West Virginia is off a comeback victory in the “Backyard Brawl” against Pittsburgh in OT last week.
Now they travel to Kansas to face the Jayhawks in a revenge spot for KU.
Kansas is off a bye and has had two weeks to stew over its loss to Missouri.
Best of the Rest
East Carolina (+7) (-120) vs. BYU
Florida (+9.5) at Miami (FL)
Illinois/Indiana Under 52.5
Virginia (-15.5) vs. Stanford
