Last season for Alexander Ovechkin was all about the chase to break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record of 894 goals. The Great 8 broke the record and finished the season with 897 career goals. Up next for Ovi is which team will he score his 900th goal against.

Last season, Ovi went scoreless in consecutive games nine times and twice went three consecutive games without finding the back of the net.
Washington opens the season at home against the Bruins and likely starter Jeremy Swayman. In eight career games against Swayman, Ovechkin has just two goals.
From there, the Caps have road games against the Islanders and Rangers on consecutive days. Ovechkin has solid numbers against the Blueshirts, scoring five goals in 12 games against Igor Shesterkin and eight goals in 17 games versus Jonathan Quick. If you were to take a shot with the Islanders, there is an opportunity for a second kick at the record when the two teams meet again on Halloween night.
Following a day off the Capitals return home to face the Lightning, who will be on the back end of a back-to-back, leaving the possibility that backup goalie Jonas Johansson will face Ovechkin and the Capitals. For his part, Ovi has never faced Johansson, but does have 12 goals in 22 games against Andrei Vasilevskiy.
I like the “Great 8” to score his third goal somewhere between games four through six, so I am going to spread one unit on Tampa, Minnesota and Vancouver.
