It is another cut-down week for the NASCAR Cup Series, as the Bank of America Roval 400 serves as the final race in the Round of 12. The hybrid “roval”, which is part road course, part oval at Charlotte Motor Speedway was a wrinkle added to the schedule in 2018 and we’ve had five winners out of the seven races. A win here for somebody could make the difference between continuing to have a shot at the title.

That also means we only have five races left, as this is the 32nd race of the season we are scheduled for 36, with the Championship Race at Phoenix on November 2.

The race winners so far are William Byron (2), Kyle Larson (3), Christopher Bell (4), Denny Hamlin (5), Shane van Gisbergen (4), Ryan Blaney (3), Ross Chastain, Joey Logano, Austin Cindric, Josh Berry, Chase Briscoe (2), Chase Elliott (2), Bubba Wallace, and Austin Dillon through 30 points races. Elliott picked up his second win of the season last week, so he’s good to go for the Round of 8, as he gets a pass into the next round.

All remaining playoff drivers had their point totals set to 3000 and then bonus points accumulated during the season were then added. The bottom four in points of the playoff drivers will be cut from contention after each round of three races.

After last week’s Hollywood Casino 400, here are the playoff standings.

  • Kyle Larson 3124
  • Denny Hamlin 3118
  • Christopher Bell 3114
  • William Byron 3110
  • Chase Elliott 3104 (race winner)
  • Ryan Blaney 3099 (race winner)
  • Chase Briscoe 3091
  • Joey Logano 3083
  • Ross Chastain 3070
  • Bubba Wallace 3057
  • Tyler Reddick 3054
  • Austin Cindric 3035

Chastain, Wallace, Reddick, and Cindric need to be aggressive this week, as the bottom four in points will be eliminated after this race. Chastain, Reddick, and Wallace all had previous wins at Kansas, but couldn’t find the magic this time around. None of them have won on the Roval.

Bank of America Roval 400 Winners

Elliott and Larson are the multi-time winners on the Roval, as Blaney, Bell, and A.J. Allmendinger are the other race winners. It is worth noting that the course was reconfigured a bit for last year and ran 2.32 miles instead of 2.28 miles. Larson won on the slightly-modified track.

For whatever it’s worth, Chevy has five of the seven wins here. Elliott has another top-five finish here to put with his two wins. He is the highest average finisher here at 7.7, but Reddick has three top-10 finishes in his five starts and one top-five. This is a huge race for him as he tries to qualify for the next round.

Logano has been a top-10 finisher in six of the seven starts on this track, while Blaney, Bowman, and Elliott have five each. Bowman’s five have been in just six starts. He was cut from the playoffs at the end of the last round and doesn’t have a top-five finish in five playoff races.

Steve Makinen’s Initial Simulation Results

Another incredible simulation run this past Sunday at Kansas as we nailed six of the top seven, including exact finishes for 2,3, & 4. We move on to the Charlotte Roval this weekend, a circuit set up for part-oval, part-road racing.

As such, the usual road racing suspects are running at the front of the projections. However, despite egregious to win odds (-105) Shane van Gisbergen actually checks in second as of Tuesday, just behind AJ Allmendinger, who has actually been the top rated driver at the Roval over the last few runs here.

Those two look like the clear front runners, although Tyler Reddick, William Byron, and Joey Logano figure to have a say as well. Things should sort themselves out further on Saturday after P&Q however, as good runs by Christopher Bell, Chase Elliott, and Ryan Blaney could bring them closer to the top.
