Game: Los Angeles Rams vs. Carolina Panthers
Date: January 10th at 4:30 PM ET
Where to Watch: FOX
The NFL Playoffs kick off this weekend in Charlotte with a Wild Card matchup between the Rams and the Panthers. Both teams played in tightly contested divisions throughout the season, albeit for very different reasons, yet each found a way into the postseason. At one point, Los Angeles appeared to be in control of the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC, but a key Thursday night loss to the Seahawks dropped them into the fifth seed. Even so, the Rams put together an outstanding season, finishing 12–5, and will look to make a statement in their playoff opener.
Over the regular season, the Rams boasted the league’s most productive offense, leading the NFL in both yards per game (394.6) and points per game (30.5). Defensively, they were less dominant but still solid, ranking 17th in yards allowed per game (327.5) and 10th in points allowed per game (20.4).
Carolina fans have plenty to thank their division rivals for this week, as Atlanta’s win over the Saints helped the Panthers clinch the NFC South. Carolina closed the regular season at 8–9 after a Week 18 loss to the Buccaneers in a game where very little went their way. Offensively, the Panthers struggled at times, ranking 27th in both yards per game (295.6) and points per game (18.3). Their defense, however, held up reasonably well, coming in 16th in yards allowed per game (327.2) and 15th in points allowed per game (22.4).
This will be a rematch from earlier in the season, when the Panthers knocked off the Rams in a high-scoring affair. With postseason stakes now elevated, the playoff atmosphere in Charlotte should add another exciting layer to this matchup.

Conditions look to be chaotic, with temperatures in the mid to high 60s throughout the game, warmer than usual for this time of year in Charlotte. There is a chance of precipitation, similar to the first meeting between these teams, with rain probabilities ranging from 35% to 45% at different points. Wind could also be a factor, averaging around 14 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
Betting Overview
The betting line has seen minimal movement, with the Rams opening as 10-point favorites and ticking up slightly to -10.5 as the week has progressed. The best moneyline value on Los Angeles can be found at Fanatics Sportsbook at -575, while Carolina is available at +500 at FanDuel. The total has remained fairly steady at 46.5, with a few books shading it down slightly to 46.
Position Group & Coaching Comparisons
Coaching: The Rams, led by head coach Sean McVay, continue to showcase the type of continuity and experience most franchises strive for. McVay, along with offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, has helped build arguably the most dynamic offense in the NFL, while defensive coordinator Chris Shula has more than held his own for much of the season. On the Carolina side, Dave Canales has made noticeable progress, particularly with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who has this unit looking dramatically improved from last year. Even so, the overall coaching edge clearly favors Los Angeles, as Carolina still shows more defined shortcomings in this area.
OLs vs. DLs: Los Angeles is stacked on both sides of the line, which has been a major factor in their success this season. Carolina does have a solid offensive line, but it will face a stiff test against a Rams defensive front led by Poona Ford. The Rams also boast one of the league’s strongest offensive lines, while the Panthers’ defensive line has been inconsistent throughout the year, giving Los Angeles a clear advantage up front.
QBs: With Matthew Stafford firmly in the MVP conversation, the quarterback edge in this matchup is obvious. Bryce Young has shown flashes of promise, but those moments have been offset by stretches of questionable play, widening the gap at the position.
RBs & TEs vs. LBs: Earlier in the season, this matchup may have leaned more toward Carolina, but Rico Dowdle and the Panthers’ rushing attack have cooled off in recent weeks. Los Angeles also holds a depth advantage at tight end with Terrance Ferguson and Tyler Higbee. Neither team has excelled at off-ball linebacker, but given the Rams’ strength on offense, they hold the edge in this area.
WRs vs. Secondaries: The Rams feature one of the most prolific wide receiver groups in the NFL, an area where Carolina lacks depth. While the Panthers’ secondary has played better than Los Angeles’s, particularly down the stretch, the overall matchup still slightly favors the Rams.
Betting Trends
In the earlier matchup this season, the Panthers not only won outright, but also covered the spread, and the over cashed as well.
Los Angeles enters this contest with a strong 12-5 ATS record on the season, including a 5-3 mark on the road, a 4-2 record as an away favorite, and an 8-3 record in non-division games. Totals in Rams games have leaned toward the over, hitting in 10 of 17 overall, including 7 of 8 on the road and 5 of 6 as an away favorite. In non-division matchups, however, the under has hit in 6 of 11 games.
The Panthers are 10-7 ATS this season, with a 5-3 record at home, a strong 5-2 mark as a home underdog, and a 6-5 record in non-division games. Totals in Carolina games have favored the under, hitting in 10 of 17 overall. At home, totals have split evenly at 4-4, while the over has hit in 4 of 7 games as a home underdog. In non-division games, the over has hit in 6 of 11.
Final Thoughts
With the stakes at a completely different level than the first meeting, this game could look much different, even if the weather conditions end up being similar. This matchup may stay close early, but I expect the Rams to pull away late and secure the win, though not quite cover the 10.5-point spread. Given the potential wind and rain, I would avoid the total in this matchup.
