Cleveland Guardians vs. Philadelphia Phillies 6:40 PM ET
Christopher Sanchez Over 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-125 per DraftKings)
Tonight marks the beginning of a new interleague series for the Philadelphia Phillies as they welcome the Cleveland Guardians to town. On the mound for Philadelphia will be left-hander Cristopher Sánchez, who has been absolutely dominant throughout the month of May.
Sanchez is coming off a complete game shutout against the Pirates last week, and remarkably has not allowed a single earned run this month across 24.0 innings pitched. His season numbers have become elite as a result, as he now carries a 1.82 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and 80 strikeouts on the year.
As dominant as Sanchez has been recently, this matchup presents a completely different challenge. Cleveland enters this series red hot after sweeping a four-game set against the Tigers, and they have consistently handled left-handed pitching well all season long. The Guardians currently rank 8th in MLB against lefties with a .251 batting average and a .410 slugging percentage.
We’ve also seen Sanchez show some vulnerability earlier in the season against lineups that profile well against him. In April alone, he allowed over 1.5 earned runs in four separate starts. Cleveland’s disciplined lineup, combined with the momentum they’re carrying into this series, creates a difficult spot for Sanchez despite how incredible he has looked lately.
At some point regression was always going to arrive after a month-long scoreless streak, and tonight feels like a strong opportunity for the Guardians to finally scratch a few runs across against the Phillies southpaw.
New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins 7:10 PM ET
Carson Benge Over 0.5 Hits (-223 per DraftKings)
New York Mets rookie outfielder Carson Benge has quietly found a groove at the plate, entering tonight’s matchup riding a 6-game hitting streak. The month of May has been especially productive for Benge, as he is batting .351 with a .459 slugging percentage during the month.
On the season, Benge now owns a .262 batting average with a .360 slugging percentage, and he continues to look increasingly comfortable at the major league level.
Tonight he’ll face Eury Pérez for the first time in his career. Perez still has electric stuff, but he has struggled with consistency this season, carrying a 5.33 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, and a 7.91 H/9.
Another encouraging sign for Benge is how well he has performed in night games this season, where he owns a .315 batting average alongside a .416 slugging percentage. Given the way he’s seeing the baseball right now, it’s difficult to fade him simply to record one hit this evening.
Xavier Edwards Over 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI’s (-131 per DraftKings)
Despite the Miami Marlins currently riding a 3-game losing streak, Xavier Edwards continues to be one of the brightest spots in the lineup. Edwards enters tonight on a 7-game hitting streak and has been one of Miami’s most reliable offensive producers throughout the season.
He’s currently batting .316 on the year with a .484 slugging percentage, and his recent production has been extremely consistent. Over his last 5 games, Edwards has cleared the 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBIs mark in 4 of them, and he’s done so in 7 of his last 10 overall.
The Mets are expected to roll with a bullpen game tonight, with Tobias Myers projected to open the game. Edwards has seen Myers once previously and made the most of it, going 1-for-1 with a home run.
While New York does feature one of the stronger bullpens in baseball, asking relievers to cover all nine innings can become difficult over the course of a game. With Edwards consistently finding ways to get on base and produce offensively, he’s in another strong spot to continue his recent run of form tonight.
Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves 7:15 PM ET
Washington Nationals Over 3.5 Runs (-105 per DraftKings)
Embed from Getty ImagesThe Washington Nationals are coming off a rough offensive showing yesterday, managing to score just one run in their series finale against the Mets. Tonight, however, presents a fresh opportunity as they open a new divisional series against the Atlanta Braves.
Atlanta is expected to send Bryce Elder to the mound, and the Nationals have already seen him once this season. In that outing, Elder allowed 3 earned runs and 4 total runs across 6.2 innings of work. While Elder has shown flashes of effectiveness this year, he has still been susceptible to giving up contact, especially against lineups that can string together quality at-bats.
Washington has quietly been a much more capable offensive team than many expected entering the season. Over their last 10 games, they’ve scored over 3.5 runs in 6 contests, and they’ve done so in 3 of their last 5 as well.
The current game total sitting at 9 also suggests oddsmakers are expecting offense on both sides tonight. After being shut down yesterday, this feels like a strong bounce-back opportunity for a Nationals lineup that has consistently shown the ability to generate runs in bunches throughout the season.
Matt Olson Over 1.5 Total Bases (-104 per DraftKings)
Matt Olson and the Atlanta Braves find themselves in a very favorable matchup tonight against veteran right-hander Miles Mikolas.
Mikolas enters this game carrying a 6.91 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP across 41.2 innings this season, and he has struggled to consistently miss bats or limit hard contact. Olson has also historically matched up very well against him, batting .267 with a 1.067 OPS in 15 career at-bats.
While Olson hasn’t been at his absolute peak over the last week, clearing the 1.5 total bases mark in just one of his last five games, the overall season numbers still remain excellent. He’s batting .274 with a .569 slugging percentage, and he has especially punished right-handed pitching this season, posting a .287 batting average alongside a .609 slugging percentage against righties.
This matchup sets up as an ideal bounce-back spot for Olson, especially hitting in the middle of a powerful Atlanta lineup against a pitcher who has struggled badly this year. With the game expected to feature plenty of offense overall, Olson should have multiple strong opportunities to rack up extra bases tonight.
