Mr. Ed’s Saratoga Picks for Sunday, July 13:

TRACKING MR. ED: Once again, the rains came, this time early Saturday morning, causing havoc with racing conditions. By 11 a.m., under now-sunny skies, the Racing Office announced 42 scratches. All turf races, with the exception of the featured R11 stakes, were washed off the turf. It then rained on and off for the remainder of the afternoon, until minutes before the final race, when a monsoon drenched everything and everybody. The equine star of the day was Chad Brown’s #4 EXCELLENT TRUTH winning the G1 Diana Stakes, defeating favorite #1 She Feels Pretty by a nose. Top jockeys were the Bros. Ortiz (Irad & Jose), who captured seven of the 12 races, Jose with four and Irad with three. At the windows, the average $2 ticket returned $9. Unfortunately, showers again are in the forecast for Sunday. First post is 1:10 p.m. Here are Mr. Ed’s picks.

Race 1 (1:10 p.m. ET/10:10 a.m. PT) — $100K MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT for 3YOs & up going 1⅛-mile
Mr. Ed begins the day with a Daily Double. He likes favorite #3 CHILLAX (7-5 morning line) for the major-league team of Bill Mott and Junior Alvarado, and #4 CLASSICIST (5-2) for the popular pair of Todd Pletcher and Irad Ortiz Jr.

Mr. Ed picks #1 COMPETITIVE MARKET (7-2 morning line), trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Joel Rosario, and #6 BRILAND (3-1) for Brown and Flavien Prat. Color the winner brown.

Mr. Ed seriously considers any horse trainer Danny Gargan sends out. I like his #6 DAKOTA COUNTRY (10-1 morning line), an improving gelding who won his last with Joel Rosario, who retains the mount. Sharp work, too.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “You can use your betting money to eat. But never use your eating money to bet.” — retired jockey turned TV analyst Richard “The Mig” Migliore.

A LOOK AHEAD: With four days of the 40-day meet run and done, Saratoga begins its traditional five-day, Wednesday-thru-Sunday schedule this coming week. With a glorious 25 Grade 1 stakes yet to be contested, there’s more than enough first-class racing ahead to keep even Mr. Ed handicapping up at night until Labor Day.
