Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
Yankees starting pitcher Cam Schlittler has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season with a 1.89 ERA, allowing 0.5 home runs and 1.5 walks per nine innings. He faces a Red Sox team that is 25th in scoring with four runs per game. Red Sox starting pitcher Ranger Suarez is also putting together a nice season with a 3.38 ERA and 3.13 fielding independent while allowing only 0.6 home runs per nine innings. While the Yankees rank sixth in scoring with over five runs per game this season, they have averaged just 3.25 runs per game over the past four games since Aaron Judge left the lineup.
Pick: Red Sox vs. Yankees Under 8.5 Runs
Greg’s Handicap: 7.4
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves
Embed from Getty ImagesPirates starting pitcher Bubba Chandler has a 5.05 ERA with 1.3 home runs and six walks per nine innings. Braves starting pitcher Bryce Elder has a 2.63 ERA and a 3.35 fielding independent, but his hard-hit percentages suggest he has been fortunate to allow only 0.7 home runs per nine innings thus far. He faces a Pirates lineup that is fourth in scoring with 5.1 runs per game, while the Braves rank second with 5.2 runs per game.
Pick: Pirates vs. Braves Over 8.5 Runs
Greg’s Handicap: 9.2
Chicago White Sox vs. Philadelphia Phillies
White Sox starting pitcher David Sandlin is making his third career start after allowing nine runs across 10 innings in his first two starts. However, he posted a 0.55 ERA with 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings at the minor league level this season and should benefit from facing a Phillies lineup that is 28th in scoring with fewer than four runs per game. Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola has struggled with a 5.55 ERA this season, but his 4.23 fielding independent and 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings point toward improvement.
Pick: White Sox vs. Phillies Under 10 Runs
Greg’s Handicap: 8.9
1:37 PM Eastern
Baltimore Orioles vs. Toronto Blue Jays
Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman has pitched even better than his 3.36 ERA would indicate, as he owns a 2.95 fielding independent with 0.8 home runs and 1.7 walks per nine innings. He faces an Orioles lineup that is 19th in road run creation with 4.3 runs per game. Orioles starting pitcher Shane Baz has a 4.29 ERA with 7.9 strikeouts and 3.7 walks per nine innings and is backed by the weaker bullpen in this matchup, as the Orioles rank 23rd in bullpen ERA at 4.68 while the Blue Jays rank 14th at 4.00.
Pick: Blue Jays Moneyline -132
Greg’s Handicap: Blue Jays -160
1:40 PM Eastern
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Miami Marlins
Rays starting pitcher Griffin Jax has been much improved since moving from the bullpen to the starting rotation, posting a 3.60 ERA with 1.4 home runs per nine innings allowed as a starter compared to an 8.00 ERA with three home runs per nine innings allowed as a reliever. Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara owns a 4.69 ERA with a lower 4.25 fielding independent and is supported by a lineup that ranks 20th in scoring with 4.2 runs per game and a bullpen that ranks ninth in ERA at 3.60.
Pick: Rays vs. Marlins Under 8.5 Runs
Greg’s Handicap: 7.8
2:10 PM Eastern
Athletics vs. Houston Astros
Astros starting pitcher Mike Burrows has had a tough time on the mound, posting a 5.66 ERA and allowing two home runs per nine innings this season. Athletics starting pitcher Gage Jump has a 3.75 ERA through 12 innings and two career MLB starts. While the Athletics have the lower bullpen ERA, ranking 21st at 4.43 compared to the Astros’ 29th-ranked 5.14 ERA, Houston is getting back to full strength with Josh Hader returning from the injured list and ranks 12th in run production with over 4.5 runs per game.
Pick: Astros Moneyline -104
Greg’s Handicap: Astros -133
Kansas City Royals vs. Minnesota Twins
Royals starting pitcher Noah Cameron has pitched better than his ERA would indicate, posting a 4.22 ERA with a 3.40 fielding independent while allowing 0.9 home runs and 2.6 walks per nine innings. Twins starting pitcher Connor Prielipp owns a 5.25 ERA but a much better 3.75 fielding independent with 0.9 home runs allowed and 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings. He faces a Royals lineup that ranks last in baseball in road scoring with 3.5 runs per game.
Pick: Twins Moneyline -104 and Under 9 Runs
Greg’s Handicap: Twins -128 and Total 8.1
2:35 PM Eastern
Cleveland Guardians vs. Texas Rangers
Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom has had issues with home runs, allowing 1.8 home runs per nine innings, but he still owns a 3.48 ERA with 10.9 strikeouts and 1.8 walks per nine innings. He faces a Guardians lineup that ranks 22nd in scoring with 4.1 runs per game and 22nd in home runs per at-bat. Guardians starting pitcher Joey Cantillo has a 3.92 ERA and a 4.68 fielding independent while allowing 4.9 walks per nine innings. He is supported by a bullpen that ranks 11th in ERA at 3.68, while the Rangers bullpen ranks sixth at 3.27.
Pick: Rangers Moneyline -126
Greg’s Handicap: Rangers -154
3:10 PM Eastern
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Colorado Rockies
Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Freeland has been shelled this season, posting an 8.06 ERA while allowing 2.4 home runs per nine innings. Although the Brewers rank fifth in scoring with 5.1 runs per game, they are last in home runs per at-bat. Brewers starting pitcher Shane Drohan owns a 2.87 ERA with 9.5 strikeouts and 0.6 home runs allowed per nine innings. While he does not provide much length, having never completed five innings in any of his 12 career appearances, he is supported by a bullpen that ranks eighth in ERA at 3.34.
Pick: Brewers vs. Rockies Under 12.5 Runs
Greg’s Handicap: 11.2
4:10 PM Eastern
San Diego Padres vs. New York Mets
Padres starting pitcher Randy Vasquez has pitched to a lot of contact with only 6.9 strikeouts per nine innings, but he has maintained a 3.31 ERA while allowing 1.2 home runs and 2.5 walks per nine innings. The Mets are expected to use Sean Manaea as either the starter or a bulk pitcher. He owns a 5.08 ERA with 3.7 walks per nine innings and is backed by a lineup that ranks 28th in road scoring with fewer than 3.7 runs per game.
Pick: Padres Moneyline -112
Greg’s Handicap: Padres -146
8:20 PM Eastern
San Francisco Giants vs. Chicago Cubs
Giants starting pitcher Trevor McDonald enters in a funk, having allowed at least three runs in four of his past five starts, raising his ERA to 4.50 this season. Cubs starting pitcher Jameson Taillon has a 5.17 ERA and a 6.34 fielding independent with 2.7 home runs allowed per nine innings, but he is supported by the better bullpen and lineup. The Giants rank 18th in bullpen ERA at 4.29, while the Cubs rank 12th at 3.69. Offensively, the Cubs rank ninth in scoring with 4.7 runs per game, while the Giants rank 20th at 4.2 runs per game.
Pick: Cubs Moneyline -110 and Over 8 Runs
Greg’s Handicap: Cubs -152 and Total 8.6
