🏀 NBA: Spurs shock the champs

I watched the Spurs’ 111-103 victory over the defending champion Thunder on Saturday night at the Circa sportsbook. It was a very pro-Spurs crowd, including Matt Youmans, who cashed San Antonio +3.5.

VSiN NBA analyst Zach Cohen shared his notes on Saturday night’s Game 7:

Heading into this game, underdogs in Game 7s that were coming off double-digit wins in Game 6 were 15-4 against the spread — and 6-0 ATS when playing as ‘dogs of 3.5 or fewer. That strong trend held firm, with San Antonio going into the Paycom Center and winning 111-103.

This game wasn’t anything like the double-overtime classic we saw in Game 1, but it gave us the type of roller coaster we needed. In the end, the Spurs enjoyed the ride a little bit more, with six players scoring in double figures and the team combining to shoot 17 for 40 from deep.

The Thunder, despite getting 35 points from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, didn’t have the same kind of balance. Chet Holmgren had four points in 33 minutes, and his no-showing for most of the series ultimately helped do Oklahoma City in.

Of course, the Thunder were without Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell, and that context matters when auditing OKC’s season. But San Antonio was fearless, Victor Wembanyama set the tone with his usual brand of dominant two-way play, and Mitch Johnson had a better game plan than Mark Daigneault.

Game 1 preview

Not only is this a rematch of the 1999 NBA Finals, it’s also a rematch of the NBA Cup Championship in Las Vegas, won by New York 124-113.

In three meetings with the Spurs during the regular season, Jalen Brunson and Co. won two against Wembanyama’s crew. Despite that, San Antonio is a -205 favorite to win the series at DraftKings Sportsbook.

One more Finals note: More details have emerged from the curious case of Mitchell Robinson’s broken pinky. Knicks coach Mike Brown said the injury didn’t occur in practice or a game. Robinson will try to play in the Finals.

I checked in with VSiN hockey analyst Jonathan Davis to get his early thoughts on the Golden Knights-Hurricanes Stanley Cup Final, which starts Tuesday in Raleigh.

JD likes Vegas to win it all and will share his rationale and player props Monday on VSiN.com.

In the meantime, he has already posted his bets on the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP.
