Game: Charlotte 49ers at East Carolina Pirates
Date: November 8th at 3:00 PM ET
Where to Watch: ESPN+
Coming into this week, the Charlotte 49ers are coming off a much-needed bye as they travel to Greenville, North Carolina, to take on the ECU Pirates. It appears Grayson Loftis has solidified himself—at least for now—as the starting quarterback for this 49er’s offense. He put up solid numbers against North Texas two weeks ago, but when you’re facing a team that throws for 608 yards, there’s only so much you can do. Entering this week, Charlotte ranks among the worst offenses in the FBS, averaging just 291 yards per game (129th) and 14 points per game (130th). The defense hasn’t fared much better, allowing 481 yards per game (133rd) and 37.6 points per game (127th).
ECU, meanwhile, has been steady this season, coming into this matchup with a 5-3 record (3-1 in American Conference play). The Pirates boast one of the better offenses in the FBS, averaging 466.7 yards per game (13th) and 28.7 points per game (57th). Defensively, they’ve been strong as well, allowing 351.3 yards per game (44th) and 18.7 points per game (18th). It feels like another uphill battle for Charlotte, but if they can stay competitive, it would be a positive sign for the program’s progress.

Saturday in Greenville is shaping up to be unseasonably warm, with temperatures in the mid-70s at kickoff before dipping into the 60s as the game progresses. Precipitation is a mild concern, with current forecasts showing a 25% chance of rain. Winds could also play a small factor, averaging around 9 mph with gusts up to 14 mph.
Betting Overview
We haven’t seen much movement in the lines for this game, as ECU opened as a 28.5-point favorite and has remained there. The moneyline varies quite a bit depending on the sportsbook, with the best value for Charlotte at +3000 and ECU at -5000. The total has also held steady, with most books keeping the original line of 55.5, though a few have moved slightly up to 56.5.
Power Ratings
- ESPN FPI: In this model, ECU sits at 49th, giving 5.6 points to the FBS average, while Charlotte ranks 134th, receiving 22.5 points from the field average. Based on these numbers, FPI would have ECU as a slightly heavier favorite than the current line, especially factoring in home-field advantage.
- SP+: This model mirrors FPI’s outlook, with ECU ranked 48th and giving 6.4 points to the field average, while Charlotte again sits at 134th, receiving 22.6 points. SP+ also projects ECU as the stronger favorite in this matchup.
Betting Trends
These programs have met in each of the past two seasons, with Charlotte winning and covering in both matchups. The total has split evenly, with one over and one under in those contests.
Charlotte has struggled against the spread this season, posting a 1-5-2 record. On the road, they’ve recorded two pushes and remain winless in conference play at 0-3-2 ATS. Overs have been a consistent trend for the 49ers, hitting in five of eight games overall and splitting one apiece on the road. Within conference play, the over has cashed in four of five.
ECU, on the other hand, has been a strong team against the spread with a 5-2-1 record. At home, they’re an even 2-2, and 2-1-1 within the American Athletic Conference. The under has hit in five of eight games this season, including a 2-2 split at home, though the over has been more favorable when they’ve been home favorites. In conference play, totals have also split evenly with two overs and two unders.
Final Thoughts
Charlotte has been an incredibly tough team to bet on this season, with spreads continuing to move further out of their favor. This week’s road matchup against ECU presents an interesting opportunity. I’m staying away from this game from a spread perspective, though I’d lean slightly toward Charlotte covering. I’d also lean toward the over.
