Czechia vs South Africa | 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A | Thursday, June 18 | 12PM EST | Mercedes-Benz Stadium | Atlanta
Czechia (-130) | Draw (+275) | South Africa (+390)
Over 2.5 Goals (+105) | Under 2.5 Goals (-130)
Czechia -0.5 (-135) | South Africa +0.5 (+105)
Thursday’s lunchtime kickoff in Atlanta brings together two sides that lost on Matchday 1 but arrive in very different moments.
South Africa were woeful against Mexico, shipping two goals and finishing with nine men after two red cards in the second half. They created next to nothing going forward and stuck to their game plan, sitting back and keeping things tight despite Mexico scoring after nine minutes. Sithole’s red card on 49 minutes opened the game up and Mexico’s second arrived 18 minutes later. A comfortable win for El Tri, and a shambolic night for Hugo Broos’ side.
Czechia arrive here knowing what could have been. Second best for long stretches against South Korea, they could have won it — or at least grabbed a point — had they been stronger defensively. Matej Kovar kept them in it at times and captain Ladislav Krejci’s header from a Vladimir Coufal long throw gave them the lead on the hour. They couldn’t hold it, Hwang Inbeom equalizing eight minutes later before Oh Hyeongyu tucked in the winner in the 80th minute. A tough result, but one that exposed a defensive fragility they need to address if they’re to advance in this tournament.
With the loser almost certainly heading home, this is as close to a knockout game as the group stage gets.
CZECHIA TEAM NEWS
Embed from Getty ImagesMiroslav Koubek has a full squad at his disposal and I think he’ll stick with the same lineup that started against South Korea. They’ll likely need a win here and a draw against Mexico to advance, so sticking with the same formation and setup makes sense.
23-year-old attacking player Adam Hložek will feature at some point from the bench. The Hoffenheim forward is getting back up to speed after a long-term foot injury kept him out for most of this season and halted his development — he racked up 11 goals and three assists in the 2024/25 season, numbers that underline the potential he offers to this Czechia forward line when fit and in form.

SOUTH AFRICA TEAM NEWS
Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane are both suspended after picking up red cards against Mexico. Given how poorly they performed against the joint hosts in the opening game, it might be a blessing in disguise, as it forces Hugo Broos to introduce fresh faces to the lineup and hopefully switch up his approach.
Looking at previous matches, I think he’ll revert to a 4-2-3-1. That formation featured heavily throughout qualifying and after such a devastating loss and performance, I think we’ll see him fall back on what got Bafana Bafana here.
Due to the suspensions, I think we’ll see Thalente Mbatha come into central midfield alongside Teboho Mokoena. Oswin Appollis was their best attacking player in qualifying, scoring two goals and providing four assists, and he looks likely to be restored to the starting lineup.

MATCH BREAKDOWN
In my match preview for Mexico vs South Africa, I raised concerns about South Africa’s ability to be an attacking threat and I was proved right. Against Mexico they generated an absolute pittance of xG with 0.07 from three shots with two coming from 30+ yards out. Broos’ game plan to keep it tight and try and nick something in the closing stages was undone by Sithole’s red card early in the second half. What little attacking threat they had disappeared with it.
The one hope they have is Czechia gave up 2.30 xG and four big chances against South Korea and have only kept six clean sheets in their last 15 games — and three of those came against Gibraltar (twice) and San Marino.
Czechia’s greatest hope is striker Patrik Schick, who I’ve been a big fan of for years. At 30 years old, he’s entering the peak of his career and this is exactly the kind of opponent where his talents shine. Over the last two seasons, he’s scored 49 goals across 87 games for Bayer Leverkusen — better than a goal every two games. Against a South African defense that allowed 35-year-old Raul Jimenez to score and accumulate 0.84 xG over four chances, he’s going to cause them similar, if not more, problems.
Czechia’s set piece delivery is another threat South Africa may have limited experience facing. Coufal’s long throws deliver the ball into dangerous areas with pace and precision, and when you pair that with corners, Bafana Bafana have a real problem. Czechia fielded seven outfield players between 6’2″ and 6’5″ in their opener. South Africa lined up with just two players over six foot, topping out at 6’2″. We’ll discover on Thursday whether Broos finds a solution or not.
THE BET
Looking at the markets, I’m drawn to Czechia Win to Zero +185. It’s a fantastic price considering it hit for us against Mexico and how poor South Africa were in the final third. It’s a great value bet I would take if I could find the evidence to trust Czechia’s back line.
Instead, I’m putting my trust into Patrik Schick at the other end of the field. Looking at the clubs South Africa’s defense plays at, it’s clear they have little to no experience facing a player of his quality. His touch, clinical finishing, intelligent movement and ability in the air will fire Czechia to three points and keep their hopes of moving into the knockout stage alive. At +155 for anytime goalscorer, his price is too good to turn down.
I’m combining Czechia’s moneyline -130 with Czechia’s Team Total Over 1.5 Goals -111 for a +120 Same Game Parlay I’m confident hits against arguably the poorest side we’ve seen at the World Cup so far.
Pick: Patrik Schick Anytime Goalscorer +155
Pick: Same Game Parlay Czechia Moneyline -130 and Czechia Team Total Over 1.5 Goals -111 = +120
