NBA Futures Betting Outlook Entering Conference Finals

Conference Finals are officially set in the NBA, as the Cleveland Cavaliers survived another grueling seven-game battle last night against the Detroit Pistons. With Round 2 now complete, attention fully shifts toward what should be two highly competitive conference championship matchups.

The Western Conference Finals officially tip off this evening in what many expected to be the marquee matchup of the postseason between the San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

San Antonio certainly earned its spot the hard way against the Minnesota Timberwolves, but the Spurs ultimately took control late in the series with strong performances in Games 5 and 6. Oklahoma City, meanwhile, has looked virtually untouchable through two rounds, sweeping both opponents and entering this series with significant momentum and extra rest.

That said, the Thunder now face their toughest challenge yet. The Spurs handed Oklahoma City 4 losses during the regular season, and San Antonio’s depth, and physicality create a very different challenge compared to what the Thunder have faced so far this postseason. Oklahoma City’s extended rest advantage could still prove massive as the series progresses, especially if the games become more physical deeper into the series.

On the Eastern Conference side, the New York Knicks will take on the Cavaliers in another fascinating matchup. Cleveland has already played 14 playoff games through two rounds, with both series going the distance in seven games. While the Cavaliers have shown resilience repeatedly, the workload and lack of rest could become a factor.

The Knicks, on the other hand, have had a much smoother path recently. After defeating the Atlanta Hawks in six games during Round 1, New York dominated the Philadelphia 76ers in a quick four-game sweep. That extra recovery time could be incredibly important heading into a series against a Cleveland team that has been forced into multiple exhausting playoff battles already.

Both Conference Finals feature teams entering with very different paths, momentum levels, and rest advantages, which makes these odds especially interesting as sportsbooks continue adjusting throughout the postseason.

Both the Eastern and Western Conference Finals feel relatively wide open at this stage, which is somewhat rare this deep into the postseason. Every remaining team has shown stretches where they’ve looked dominant, and every team still has enough star power to realistically envision a path to the NBA Finals.

The biggest separation comes when looking at the championship odds themselves, as the Western Conference teams are viewed much more favorably against whoever survives the East. The Oklahoma City Thunder are clearly the betting favorite right now to win the NBA Finals, and it’s easy to understand why considering how dominant they’ve been through two playoff rounds without dropping a game. Their depth, pace, perimeter defense, and ability to score from multiple spots on the floor make them an incredibly difficult matchup in a seven-game series.

That said, the San Antonio Spurs still present a fascinating challenge, especially with Victor Wembanyama continuing to emerge as one of the most impactful players in basketball. The Spurs have already proven they can compete with Oklahoma City during the regular season, and Wembanyama’s ability to completely alter games defensively gives San Antonio a ceiling few teams can match. The question will simply be whether the Spurs have enough offensive consistency and depth to keep pace over a long series.

In the Eastern Conference, the New York Knicks appear to have a slight edge at the moment due largely to their rest advantage and how dominant they looked against Philadelphia in Round 2. New York’s physical style of play, combined with their defensive toughness, gives them a legitimate shot to reach the Finals.

If the Knicks are able to get through the Cleveland Cavaliers, it will be really interesting to see how sportsbooks price a Finals matchup against either Western Conference team. Even if New York enters as an underdog, their current trajectory and playoff form could make them a trendy pick depending on how competitive the Western Conference Finals becomes.
