Cristian Garin vs. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

Garin is better than your standard world No. 104. The 29-year-old was the 17th-ranked player in September of 2021. He just hasn’t been able to stay healthy, making it hard to find a rhythm when he has been on the court. Well, Garin looks to be finding something right now. The Chilean went to the Round of 32 in Monte Carlo, losing a very close match against Alexander Zverev at that stage. It was a great performance for him, and he has also played rather well here so far. Garin got through qualifying despite having to face Moez Echargui and Jan Choinski. He then earned a straight-set win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the opening round, and that’s another good clay-court player. Now, Garin gets an out-of-form Davidovich Fokina, meaning the Spaniard is on Upset Watch.

With Garin starting to play some strong tennis, how can you not like him as a flier at +139 odds? Davidovich Fokina comes into this one having lost three of his last four matches. He hasn’t exactly been healthy, and he hasn’t looked good when he has been out there. His performance against Casper Ruud in Madrid was really alarming, and getting involved in a physical match like this one isn’t what the doctor ordered.

I believe the outcome here will come down to Davidovich Fokina’s serving. If the Spaniard is really off with the ball on his racquet, Garin is going to flip points around very quickly.

Bet: Garin ML (+139)

Ignacio Buse vs. Frances Tiafoe

Tiafoe surprisingly played some strong tennis on the European clay-court swing last year, but he hasn’t played a single match on red clay this year. We haven’t seen the American since his loss to Tommy Paul in Houston, making it highly unlikely he’ll beat a player like Buse. This is just a tough matchup for Tiafoe, as Buse is 13-10 on clay at the ATP level and has done more damage at the Challenger level. He’s your classic clay-court specialist that can really be tough to outperform from the baseline, and I don’t like Tiafoe’s power game against him.

Buse also got some good practice here. Not only did he beat Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-3 last round, but he also got to face Novak Djokovic in a practice set. While Djokovic might have lost to Dino Prizmic in the first round, that’s still a good little hitting partner.

Buse also has some real power to his game. While I called him a clay-court specialist, there is the potential for him to turn into an all-courter.

Bet: Buse ML (-156 – 1.5 units)
